toddler fall + winter capsule wardrobe

With chilly weather here to stay, we recently bought our toddler her Fall/Winter capsule––and honestly, it’s my favourite one I’ve ever put together. I actually wish it were my capsule! It’s full of cozy knits, and fun details; I’m really so pleased with how it came together.

For this 3T capsule, we have:

8 bottoms

9 tops

1 warm coat, denim jacket, and hoodie

2 pairs of pajamas

1 pair each of: snow boots, warm boots, leather boots, and church shoes

–– Now, full disclosure, we are re-using one pair of her Spring capsule’s (grey) pants, because they work well with everything else. The denim jacket and hoodie were also from the previous season. She will have a third set of pajamas at Christmastime, and was gifted two neutral play dresses by the grandmas. Also, she was given several dresses that were mine, and still fits in all her dresses, so I’ve only gotten her one dress––her Christmas dress–this season. ––

I feel like I hit my stride putting Gwendolyn’s cold-weather capsule together. Since it’s the 4th one I’ve done for her (and my 6th capsule total), I’ve really figured out how much of everything we need. Enough to last a week, and maybe put on something new if we get messy.

This capsule was a mix of Gap, Old Navy, OshKosh, Zara, Target, and H&M. It’s a lot of shops, but I think it was worth finding the right pieces, because it’s just a lovely little set.

Several of the bottoms are black, and all very muted, but the details on each make them special: glitter, bows, zippers, velvet dots, hearts… a subtle flair. The tops are actually largely solid, too. Again, not boring by any means: buttons, knits, interesting silhouettes, and colors really shine.

We had to replace all of of her shoes for the first time in 2 years (I used to be really bad at sizing). It’s a lot of boots, but I think they each have a place. Snow boots for outdoor play, warm boots for cold outings, and leather boots for warmer days or indoor excursions.

Since Gwendolyn is old enough now to care about what she wears, I continued what I started when I was choosing her Spring capsule, and made she she liked all of the selections. Basically, I make a Pinterest board, and ask her if she likes each item––and give her a few options to go between for 2 or 3 of each category. She chose her all her shoes (and has unfortunately expensive taste), a few tops, and a couple of pants, as well as her jacket, and pajamas.

So much of the time, kids don’t get a huge say in what goes on in their lives, so I think it’s really nice to empower them by letting them choose their own clothes (though I’ve found letting them choose from your selections works well, while browsing websites with them is overwhelming).
