When it comes to schedules, I’m all over the place. On the one hand, I l o v e making lists, and crafting the ~perfect~ schedule—down to the minute—is a bit intoxicating for me. On the other hand, rigid schedules feel constricting, and I hate not being able to enjoy the moment, and feel out my day. Either way, a while back, I was feeling like our mornings were so hectic and unpleasant, I knew we had to get a loose routine sorted out.
I have 1 morning golden rule for you that’s loosey-goosey enough to work whenever you want to start your day:
Once you are up, don’t go downstairs —or down the hall, depending on your home—until you and the kids dressed and ready. You + kids with brushed teeth, hair, dressed. Get your face washed face and makeup on, if you’re wearing any.
At least in my house, it’s really easy to just get up and go feed the cats (who are swarming), then feed the kids, grab a bite myself, start tidying, and whatever else, and then suddenly it’s noon, and we’re all still mostly naked.
Before we implemented this routine, no matter what time of day we had to leave the house, I felt like someone had some significant getting ready to do, if not multiple someones. Or I’d feel really blah all day, because I hadn’t taken any care of myself.
This simple rule literally changed my mornings from very unpleasant to totally okay. I feel refreshed and good in my skin, and the kids look civilized, and ready to take on the day.
If you’re like me, and aren’t great at sticking to a rigid schedule, try just getting everyone and yourself ready before you get your day going proper. I hope it makes a difference for you, too!
