favourite provo restaurants

One of my very favourite parts about living in Provo is the food scene. There is such a huge variety of foods from all over the world, as well as organic restaurants with great prices. For anyone around looking for a new place to try, or to visitors trying to find the best spots, this list is for you—our favourite local restaurants (keep in mind, these are only restaurants in the city of Provo):

$

Cupbop – Korean BBQ in a cup. The menu is small, but the portion are large! Eat bowl is has rice, cabbage, and a protein of your choice. Then, you get to choose the sauce on a scale of sweet to hot. Personally, as someone who can’t take much heat, 3 is hot enough for me (especially if I order the spicy chicken), but, by all means, go nuts. The food is filling, and the service great. I like to get an aloe drink as well, and my toddler  l o v e s  the mandu.

Kneader’s – a Utah classic that serves sandwiches, soups, and desserts. If you’re looking for something fast, with a homemade feel, you’re at the right place. On Saturday nights, after 8, their desserts are discounted, which makes for a fun activity with friends, too. Todd likes the french dip and chocolate croissants, though we an’t recommend anything off the kid’s menu.

Shirley’s – this establishment is much like Kneaders, but with a slightly more interesting menu. They offer more party options, if that’s your thing, and have a wider variety of bread and sandwich combos. I personally love several of the sandwich options, but especially making my own. Their kids menu sandwich is just a scaled down regular one. Also, this is the place for some good hot chocolate.

Green Panda Cafe – we’ve been visiting this spot for years, and it’s definitely our favourite asian restaurant. The ‘mongolian beef’, and other staple dishes won’t look or taste like every other place, because it’s all homemade—and delicious. The potstickers are amazing, though I also recommend the cream cheese wontons, bao, egg flower soup, black pepper chicken, and cashew chicken. Dine in, because the atmosphere is cute and cozy!

Slab Pizza – right on BYU campus, this pizza place serves you the equivalent of 3 slices in one ‘slab’. The toppings are really unique, so you’ll be able to find something for everyone. I love anything with goat cheese, and Todd goes for BBQ.

J-Dawgs – just around the corner from Slab, J-Dawgs is another BYU staple. I was not interested in the idea of hot dogs, at first, but they’re not just hot dogs. They’re cross-cut brats with delicious sauce that’ll keep you coming back for more. Super cheap, and pretty filling.

Cubby’s – now opening locations all over the state, Todd and I have been visiting the original Cubby’s since it opened. If you’re looking for food that’ll make leave you feeling good, but has a wide variety of options on the menu, this is a great bet. My toddler seriously  l o v e s  the mac ’n cheese, but everything is fantastic. They’ve got yummy steak sandwiches, amazing salads (and I am not a salad person), great burgers and fries, shakes, and cookies. Also, their brunch menu is amazing. And all for a reasonable price.

CHOM Burger – Todd loves diner burgers, and I like artisan ones, but where we meet in the middle is at Chom. You’ll get an exceptionally tasty burger, but not feel heavy afterwards—what more can you ask for?

Bombay House – one of my very favourite restaurants. It’s so good, I’ve not had Indian food anywhere else in the valley! The smell when you walk in is to die for. The staff is friendly, and super great when you bring kids (a plus). I’ve never been disappointed, but I’ll say our favourites are, garlic naan, chicken tikka masala, chicken makhani, and, the most amazing drink in this world: mango lassi. Just go.

osaka

Osaka – before Todd took me out to Osaka, I had never had Japanese cuisine. Now, it’s just one of those comfortable places we always end up. The atmosphere is quiet—if you’re not there during peak hours—and reminds me of a theatre, in the best way possible. We love their chicken yakitori starter, steak donburi, and tonkatsu. If you order off their kid’s menu, you’re in for a treat, too.

pier49

Pier49 Pizza – this is our go-to pizza place. It fits a little more into the category of ‘standard pizza’, except it’s san fran-style sourdough pizza, with well-seasoned sauce as the base for all pizzas. We really like the 49er, Gold Rush, and Lombard Street.

$$$

Mozz Pizza – my  a b s o l u t e  favorite pizza on the planet! Mozz is a relatively new joint, and it’s a small menu of artisan pizzas (though they offer some fun drink options, as well as a few other yummy plates). I have never been disappointed—in fact, I’m always extremely delighted with whatever I order. My toddler has also really taken to Mozz, and their White (“salad pizza”) is her favourite pizza, and she asks to get it a lot. I’m very proud of her snooty tastebuds. The price is high, but everything about the food is worth it.

Block – the fanciest establishment on this list, Block is my go-to for special occasions. They have a fanatic charcuterie board—which our whole family enjoys—and their entries are always delicious. I also love that they are a farm-to-table restaurant. Recently, they’ve opened for lunch, and I am definitely hoping to give that a try sometime.

Those are our very favourite eateries around town. If you haven’t checked out a place from this list, I highly suggest you make a date of it and go! Great food is out there!
