It’s been a hot minute (2 years) since I put together one of these, but wanted to share my daughter’s 6 year old fall + winter capsule wardrobe. As my kids are growing, I want to show how you can apply the capsule goals at any age (not just adult, or little little kids).
This time, we have:
7 tops
8 bottoms
1 demin jacket, 1 warm jacket
— this season, we have left over winter pjs, shoes, and tights, which will not be included —
To start off, I tried to have a good base of neutrals, so ensure things can mix and match easily, and then add in a few colors to make lots of fun options available.
This season, shades of pink, and teal happened to be abundant, and liked by my daughter, so that’s what we went with. Though the teal color is pretty consistent, you can see we used a wide range of pink/berry tones.
Most of the shirts are fairly basic—many ribbed—though we do have a waffle print, and a bold pattern with all our colors in it. My only regret this capsule is the number of crop tops. All the pants are high-waisted, so I thought we’d be good with a some slightly shorter tops (3!), but they just don’t cover things, unfortunately. My daughter doesn’t mind layering, but I would not buy them again.
With the tops not being too out there, we decided ot have fun with the pants. Bold prints and colors can be fun (for some people), but that’s not the only way to make a pant neat. For the first time ever, we bought my daughter a couple of pairs of flairs (and they took some adjustment for someone who’s only even worn leggings, and skinny jeans, let me tell you). We also have a pair of paper bag trousers, two pairs of high-waisted jeans, and—the stars—three pairs of skirt-pants. We love these! Not only are they well-made and durable, but the keep my daughter warm, and give her that coveted twirl she loves. (She went through a phase a couple of years ago where she would o n l y wear Alice & Ames twirl dress, because they had the right spin to them.)
For outerwear, we bought a denim jacket, and got a sweet sale deal on a nice teddybear coat, which is perfect for cold weather. Lastly, we have a corduroy overall dress that’s super darling, and easy to style with various tops + tights.
Hopefully, you can see that you can still make a fun and distinctive wardrobe suitable for kiddos, even with a large base of neutrals. My daughter is able to create totally bright and eye-catching outfits; or more mature, muted ones, depending on her mood + what’s on the agenda for the day.
