try: the wick lab

In the last decade, Provo has really become a fun place to be, offering lots of amazing eateries, and cool experiences in town. One of our favourites is The Wick Lab.

At The Wick Lab, you get to pour your own candle (though I think they offer other things, like lotions now, but we’ve not done that), which his amazing, if, say, Target keeps changing the scent in your favourite holiday candle, despite keeping the name the same, and eventually, it stops smelling like the original scent that you liked so much.

When you visit, you collect a clipboard (one for every candle you plan to make), and head over to their large wall of scents. There, you can sniff around 100 scents, and decide which are your favourites, and which ones you think could pair well together. In the end, you can use up to 3 scents per candle. You’ll also get to choose from at least half a dozen containers for your candle.

Once you think you have it narrowed down, you go to counter, where you’ll be able to smell just your selections together to see if it works for you, and switch out any particular scent that doesn’t suit you for another on your list. You can also choose between a standard wick, or—my favourite—a crackling wooden wick that sounds like a tiny fire. From there, you fill up a cup with the scents in whatever ratio you want, so you can get the balance just right. With that sorted, you mix it in to the hot wax (adding glitter, if you want it to look extra fancy).

Now, it’s time to name your candle. This will be on your paper for pick up later, so you’ll want to pick a decent one. No pressure. Design your label, with the candle’s name on it, and you’ve created your very own custom candle!

It takes a few days for the candles to cure before you can take them home, so keep this in mind; though they do offer shipping.

We have been half a dozen times now, and it’s always fun (though the overwhelming scents usually give my allergies a headache). We love that they use 100% soy wax, and top-tier essential and non-essential oils.

During advent, we have had making Christmas candles on our list the last few years. My daughter and I have also gone the last two years right before school starts to craft a special scent for the new school year to light only during our weekly Poetry Tea Time. Last year, we had one that was centered around the orange blossom scent; this year, our candle is a field of flowers.

Admittedly, my husband was much better at pairing scents the first time we went, but I have since learned that I do well if I have a plan going in. Now, we have a ‘family scent’—courtesy of m e—that’s our perfect fragrance.

Or, as I fondly call it: pine, pine, dirt.

Whether you’re just visiting Provo for a bit, or you’re local, and looking for something fun and unique to do in the valley, The Wick Lab should be on your list.

Have you been? What kinds of candle fragrances of you like best?
