Because we’re properly in the thick of winter, we’re doing back-to-back kids‘ capsule posts! Plus, I figured, if I shared my oldest’s wardrobe, then I had to share my favourite capsule I’ve ever curated: my three year old’s current fall + winter capsule.
This one is so fun, because it’s just clothes that an adult could wear, but in mini size, which I a d o r e. It’s also special, because I have had a really hard time figuring out a style for my son.
With my daughter, I’ve been able to experiment with different styles, until I figured out what I liked, and, now, what works for her. I’ve always heard that boys clothes were less fun, but I had such an easy time selecting pieces I liked when he was a baby, that I didn’t understand that. As he grew into toddlerhood, I was drawn to basics, and graphic tees (because I love a good graphic tee). Unfortunately, once we actually had those clothes, I found them shapeless, and basic—but not in a classic, ‘simple but decent’ way. More like a boring, shapeless, way. From there, I didn’t really know what to do, because, as it turns out, there are less stylistic options for boys.
But, then, I discovered Olive & Scout. Though they don’t have a lot of pieces, they offer fantastic stylish clothes for boys. It was like discovering Alice & Ames dresses for my daughter—I finally had a place where I could do the bulk of my shopping, and be happy with almost anything on the site! And when the clothes arrived, I was so delighted with them, that my son took to them straight away (who wouldn’t want to wear ‘cool guy outfits’?). So, this capsule is built around + with a lot of clothes from Olive & Scout.
To make this capsule, we have:
7 shirts
6 pants
4 jackets
2 shoes
Though this capsule is delightfully ‘grown up clothes, but mini’, I didn’t want my son to feel like his clothes were boring, especially with so many neutrals. To work around this, I made sure we had comfy pieces he’d enjoy wearing, and threw in some fun, unique items that I knew he’d love. My favourite piece is the fanny pack sweatshirt with a real zipper pouch (he loves pockets!). We’ve also got a celestial print jacket (he’s into space right now), and some shoes—it turns out, incidentally—match one of his favourite person’s shoes.
Given that he still can wear some of last year’s earthy-tone cold weather clothes, he’s got a good mix of neutral base, and just a bit of color. But he’s also three, and doesn’t seem to care (yet).
I hope that my journey to find appealing little boys clothes can either provide you direct inspiration, or give you the pep you need to keep searching for the right look for your little one!
