2020 resolution word + a new tradition

2020 is mere hours away. Somehow. I recently looked back on my 2018 year review + resolutions (which you can check out here), and was pleasantly surprised that I’d managed to hit nearly all my goals for the year!

We did improve the house; we went on two trips (but then a baby, so I’ll forgive me on not traveling more); I was more diligent with exercising, because I paid someone to make me!; I have read a good number of books this year; I think my photos have improved; I got many more plants (only lost 2, and got rid of another); and we did do an entire sustainable capsule wardrobe for Gwendolyn in the Spring. Whew!

This year, I thought I’d take a different approach. I have goals—a lot of them the same: get more plants; exercise; read; keep improving photos; improve the house—however, I’m going to focus on an idea. Instead of just a list of specific goals that I would have anyway, I’m choosing a word for the year. Basically, then when choices come up, I can remember what I want the focus for the year to be. My word is:

c a r e

Care is all about me, and my family (as opposed to, say, community). For example: care of ourselves body & mind, sticking to routines; and budget, to name a few. It’s not about doing as much as possible, it’s about being good stewards, making sure each member of our family is functioning well, and brushing Baek Seung Jo every day. It’s a bit insular, but after a few more hectic years, my hope is that we can take things a bit easier, and relax more, despite having a new-ish baby. And when other opportunities pop up, we can ask ourselves if it falls under care in some way. If not, we don’t have to do it.

Another tradition I hope to start his year is a memories jar. Throughout the year, we will write good memories on slips of paper, and this time next year, we can sit together and read them, reflecting on the year behind us. To ensure we remember, I’m thinking we’ll take some time during dinner to write down anything that stood out to us, though it needn’t be a daily thing.

2019 has been such a unique, and absolutely wonderful year. I’m looking forward to 2020, and to seeing where we are as individuals, and as a family after a year focused on care!
